Ruthless

“Desiree got the girls to work for her,” Justin says, following me into my office and making himself at home even though I’m still standing.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, I took them off the schedule for two night each, so I’ll get Joey to get some interviews for replacements.”

I nod. “He’s been out there all day?”

“Who?”

I stare at him. I’m too irritated to deal with Justin’s stupidity right now. I've been working at the warehouse because of the FBI agent outside the club, and it’s not exactly my ideal spot. The warehouse is loud with my runners coming in and out all day to get product. I also don’t have a true office set up, which means I’m working right in the open. I fucking hate it.

“Yeah, hasn’t moved,” Justin confirms.

I yank open my office door. Justin scrambles to his feet.

“Stay here,” I bark at him before walking down the hall, then out the front door and crossing the parking lot. It’s freezing outside, but it doesn’t even faze me as I walk up to the black sedan. The agent rolls the window down as I approach. He’s a balding white man who looks to be in his fifties and who’s probably worked his whole life to be in this position.

“Mr. Trey Miller, I wondered when you’d come out here.”

I prop my elbow against the hood of the car to lean down into the car. “Nice to meet you, Mr…”

“Agent Hunt.”

“Agent Hunt, got it. Am I in some kind of trouble? Is there something I can help you with?” I smile at him, turning on that charm that got me through four years of private school education and most of college. The one that hides the fact that I was raised in a place like this, by a man much like myself.

Agent Hunt chuckles, but there’s no humor in it. “Ha. There are actually a lot of questions you could probably clear up for me.”

“Would that get you off of the property of my perfectly legal business?”

“Absolutely not, Mr. Miller.”

“Hmmm. Well then, I’m going to have to decline. You see, I’m a pretty busy man, as you can imagine. Running Kitty City takes up a lot of time. I’m surprised the FBI is interested in something so trivial. Maybe you’re just here for your own peep show, but hey, I don’t judge.”

Agent Hunt’s face falls, like he’s done playing my game. “Watch yourself, Trey. DEA has their eyes set on Detroit, and you’re not as slick as you think you are. People talk.”

I push back from the car and nod. “Have a good day, Agent Hunt.”

As I turn around, I pull out my phone and call Desiree. “Hey, we’re going out tonight. Be ready at eight.”

*****

I sit on the living room couch, waiting for Desiree to come out of her room. I’m already dressed in my Timberlands, jeans, and a button-down shirt, complete with a diamond watch and chain that cost about as much as my car. I don’t do dates, never have, but
